I've done it a little bit at this thing a while back.

First shot, bullseye, second and third, outside of the target, rest just failed miserably Razz

oh wow you're talking about real life bows and arrows lol xD (thot u mean in rappelz)

i love archery Very Happy its the only sport i actually play regularly Razz. and indeed - harder than it looks. i usually just stay on the 30m, 40m, and 50m lines; i cant go further w/o sacrificing too much accuracy. i use a 26-32lb recurve bow, so im kinda limited =/ (im an endurance kinda archer) (make as much accurate shots til fatigue distracts your focus)

i did manage to hit the target once or twice (out of 20+ arrows) at the 90m line by sheer luck, but i had to aim up a full 45 degrees, pull back waaay past my ear, and look from the side to make the shots. i dont call that real archery but boy was it fun to break the rules i was taught xD

At rehab we once went into the woods and field with small bows -
just to learn how to let loose of the arrows. (Not as easy as it seems.)
It was great to see how far and straight it flew, how free it was.

Most girls had issues letting the arrow go.
But for me it was so meditative. I stood there, arms calm,
hold the arrow and breathed. Just staying there, breathing,
feeling the bow and arrow in hand, I felt soooo strong.

I usually freak if you give me a weapon that is not a kitchen knife.
Alex Katanas scared the hell outta me, same for daddys shotguns.
Bow and arrow were fine with me. They're rather relaxing, *lol*

Later on the therapist took away the one meter small bows -
and give us three meter tall sport bows. Wood and carbon.
Now it got more complicated since those bows are rather heavy -
and it needs more power and concentration to handle them.

I stood, breathed, felt the world and shot. Trainer was proud,
said I were "Well done". The feeling warmed me for weeks.

I definitely want one of those composit bows, the smaller ones -
that hit like a biggy. Yeah, omg, Toothy found a weapon she likes.

xD wow

lol my bows got composite arms; table is wood tho (which i forgot what kind; oh wells) Razz

i like how you speak of archery like a form of art and meditation - because i think it is xP; and also a form of mental and physical exercise

tis so relaxing sometimes, til i start pushing myself to concentrate @.@

my friends still dun get how to let the string go (they let it go as tho in a motion similar to that of opening your palm to drop an object from your hand); i still dunno if im doing like others are, but i find it very similar to plucking the strings of a guitar - only with your fingers instead of your thumb

i wanted a compound bow so badly bcuz it looked so badass when i first got interested in archery; and i still sorta do since it'll help me hold my aim longer with less fatigue. i wanted my bow to be equipped with all those fancy accessories like stabilizers, silencers, sights etc, but my instructor told me to just stick to the old-fashioned way of aiming with "instinct". "its more natural and beautiful", he says. "all these accessories make the art into a competitive sport and you lose that feeling". took me about a year to understand what he meant Razz. i've come to appreciate his advice when i alas rented a compound bow and tried it; it felt very different (since its made for ppl that need to hold their aim longer) and indeed like he said, in a way, "unnatural"

still sticking to my good ol' recurve bow Very Happy (and carbon fiber arrows bcuz theyr just the way to go xP)

anyone taken the time to try making one?
One time (back in the day of the lotr obsession), i did my research, got my measurements ready and went to my grandparents where my grandfather has a bunch of tools. I bought a log of yew, split it with an axe and carved myself a stave. I bought a string from online as well as some arrows and hey presto. It took a couple of attempts to actually make one that worked well, but once i had practiced and gotten some skill up i made one that was nice. I lost several arrows from firing them too far. Fun times

i tried making a couple out of the sticks in my dads garage by weathering them while holding em in a bent state with water... then tying a string from one end to the other. ofc i couldnt call it a real working bow, but i was able to fire a stick a couple feet lol

i didnt have money to buy any yew or "bendy" wood so i just stuck to whatever pieces of wood that wouldnt snap when i bent em >30% xP. the ones i made were really crappy from the makeshift materials i could find but it was an experience ^^. metal didnt work well since they just bend and stay bent (didnt occur to me til i tried) xD lol

but, despite lacking a source of bendy/elastic materials for the arms of a bow/crossbow, i make a working model of a ballista for my 7th grade history project (medival weapon studies) ^^ (believe it or not, the only mats/ tools i had were: a box cutter razor, a hammer, a phillip tip screwdriver, model wood glue, balsa and basswood, 1" stud nails, and cotton rope/string and twine) (my father wouldnt lemme use his tools -.-). i spent 5 days cutting the wood with a razor, waiting for glue to dry, nailing in the less delicate pieces, and drilling holes in the top and bottom of the ballista with my screwdriver xD

got an A+ on the project because my "medival weapon" was the only one that worked (fires crayon projectiles ~20feet) lol Razz. other ppl chose trebuchets that launched rocks 5 feet backwards and cannons with dyed flour for gunpowder since they didnt know how to make gunpowder (and even if they did - like i - they werent allowed to bring explosives to skool)

anyway, i'v still got my model ballista standing in my closet... but i still prefer the bow i bought xD

p.s. those that dunno wat a ballista is, i modeled mine approximately after this pic:

a ballista uses tightly wound-up fibers/ropes/strings as its elastic matter, while bows and crossbows use the elasticity of wood, and trebuchets use gravity to pull a weight downwards to propel its arm in an upwards "throwing" motion.

PostSubject: Re: I have a random urge...   Thu Mar 25, 2010 12:09 pm

Recently I got older (who doesn't), had my birthday and found a decent way to spend some bucks:

For the interested ones: Due to my body length and unsportiveness I got myself a 62", 22 lbs one.
Wood and glass-fiber laminate at the arms, arrows are carbon fiber (what else?) *lol*

[Earlier in this thread I mentioned that I'd love using a compound, but heck, they're so complicated...
so I just went ahead and bought a recurve - cos that's what I already trained with and know how to handle]

Already got myself a quiver (side quiver, black leather, red border), a bracer (short one for the fore-arm, black ofc),
sportglove (only covering the three fingers in mid, black leather (what else?)) - and thought I'd be fit for the range.

Sad but true, I'm not able to brace my bow on my own. Watching this video made me jealous but didnt help much.
I was able to bend the bow a bit, but couldn't bend it completely. Afraid of breaking the arms I went to the store and
wanted to buy a stringer. The retard at the store told me he could order one - would get delivered in abt 3 weeks.
Bloody hell, it's summer, it's bowshot-season and the idiot got the balls to tell me to wait fcking 3 weeks?! The
online-store where I ordered my bow in the first place gladly took my order and will deliver during the next 3 days.
Much more to my liking. ^^

Ofc the newb I am shouldn't just go to the field and get started but seek professional help - meeting at sports club
at Tuesday 4 PM. Now I'm basically breathing, eating and living towards that time - to finally show off like a N00B -
and have some serious fun. If I don't sit in jail cos I successfully avoided shooting my teacher I will report afterwards.

Hunter salute, Toothy

lmao

you were afraid of breaking the arms xD

well, i watched the vid, and thats the general idea of the step-through method of bracing/stringing a bow... tho in the vid, the guy had the bow at a very odd angle

when bracing my bow, i was taught to hold the bow's upper arm high up (so that the bow stands more vertically). this should make bending the bow's arm easier. the guy in the vid said to use ur left leg to "step through", but i use my right leg to step through and brace my bow because i use my right hand to bend the upper arm since my right arm is stronger than my left lol

heres wat i saw the dude in the vid do:

he held the bow (sort of) away from him - bending forward to hook the string on the bow's arm

heres wat i do:

i hold the bow more upright and closer to you. places you should feel pressure from where the bow contacts your body (assuming that you're right-handed like me): the front of your left ankle/lower leg (bottom arm hooks around here); the back of your right thigh (middle portion of the bow bends around here); your right hand (grasping the upper arm of the bow, your right hand pulls the bow's arm towards you - using your pecs/chest muscles).

three cheers for my uber drawings of awesomeness =D (i spent 30 minutes of my life drawing these just for youu! =D) (i didnt have anything better to do) (jk jk lol)

anyways if you manage to break the arms, then those arms suck; theyr meant to b bent that way xP

and dont waste ur moonay on a stringer =O unless you think they look pretty and you're an archery fanatic whos gotta have everything to make herself look pro bcuz she has more equipment than me D:

besides - a heavily-equipped compound bow is no fun =D strip-naked recurve bows are much sexier ;D

(stabilizers, scopes, silencers, STRINGERS, extra string, string oil, EXTRA STRINGERS, lotion (in case your fingers begin to callus), wood polish, snake skin guards, (bulletproof) kelvar back quiver (because kevlar is cool) BACKUP STRINGERS, stickers because your bow looks ugly, patented leather bracer, STRINGERS FOR DECORATION, crocadile skin side quiver, baby oil, barnie and friends band-aid bandages (in case your fingers start to bleed), STRINGERS FOR BEGINNERS, fireproof first aid kit, nightvision goggles (because hunters are ninjas of the forest), MORE STRINGERS, and tattered cow skin archery gloves signed by tiger woods...) all that crap is only FOR THE PROS =O dont get them! its not worth your money. that, you can give to me =).

happy belated bday btw ^^

Thanks a lot Cereal for fighting with paint to get those wonderful drawings done. I mean it, I
HATE MS paint, I usually rather take a piece of paper and a pencil instead of mouse-click-painting
for eternity.

I definitely see where you are coming from, your way of bending the bow seems less stressful and
less risky. Using the upper part of the leg to hold the bow in place means less twisting of the arms
(which in all cases should be avoided).

I already ordered the stringer, not cos I wanted to be a pro, but rather to be on the safe side. For the
other extras like a stabilizer, scope, silencer etc: I cba with those, I wanna shoot for fun, not to join
the Olympics (and at Olympics they're forbidden aswell *muhahahar*).

Wood polish never occured to me, but wax did. I'm rather worried about my string - but found a decent
method to treat it. Seen some guys putting on was on the string - and using a hairdryer to melt it and
get it in place. I don't have extra strings yet and I don't think I'll need a couple of hundreds of them soon.
^^

Cerealkiller wrote: "stickers because your bow looks ugly" - That one let me scream. NOOOOOO.
No stickers. x.x I didn't buy an expensive cherry-wood-looking bow to ruin it with STICKERS. Come over
and see my usual aplliances: Monitor: Sticker-free. Keyboard: Sticker-free. I even managed to undo all
the stickers my laptop came with cos I love my appliances naked the most. More classy Wink

"fireproof first aid kit" Was that to humor me or get me scared? ^^

"nightvision goggles (because hunters are ninjas of the forest)" Hunting in the forest is forbidden
in my country, so I don't see a reason to get stuff like that - unless you tell me, WWIII starts tomorrow.

*throwing several looks at bow at table* 3 more days baby - and the teacher at field will get u dressed. Very Happy
(If the stringer hasn't arrived till then - it'll be my teachers job bracing the bow). *still scared to ruin it*

Ooooooooooooooh and: "strip-naked recurve bows are much sexier ;D" just made me blush.
Thanks for making my day *feels so smexy with the naked bow* ^^

@.@ ya... +1 to that xD

thats y i bought a 4:3 tablet for drawing school projects and stuff, but its packed away bcuz im moving soon =/

and you do know i was joking about the stickers/goggles/snake skin boots/etc right xD? but good that u got the idea that pimping out ur bow and cluttering urself with an arsenal of useless equipment takes the art out of archery xP

i miss my beautiful archery set... havent plucked the string on my bow for about a year bcuz the closest archery range is ~3 cities away... But, thats where im moving! so yay me xD soon i'll be able to embrace archery again ^^

Well, after coming late and nearly not finding the actual sportsclub... I managed
to find a fireplace and some drinking folks around it. A few of them knowingly
smiled, waved and greeted.

One came towards me, asked who I was and what I wanted. Ofc they all noticed
the grey arrows sticking out of my backpack... Curiousity wants to be satisfied,
so I told them my short story - and quickly afterwards they shoutet for the youth
trainer.

Over-excitement is a curse: I brought my own equips - and managed to forget the
string at the kitchen table. -.-'

When they asked about my bow they were rather sceptical whether it is too light
for my strength. Since I couldn't use my own bow they gave me a fellow one which
I manged to draw rather easily. At least it seemed like that.

The first attempts were awful cos I inserted the arrow with the wrong side, (taking
care the feathers are in a special position parallel to the string seems rather
important), I didn't anker - and off they flew but didn't hit. Two attempts later the
trainer showed mercy, explained me the details and success. I'm an apt pupil as
they say.

My string doesn't have a nock-point but will get one soon seems it obviously
makes things smoother. First the arrow sticks to the string and doesn't fall down
second you always have the same starting position for your arrow then. Makes it
easier to target and a greater success rate for more fun and motivation.

I'm not sure whether it really was as easy as it seemed to draw the bow. My
arms not aching yet, but that might be cos we didn't train long. We will see how
I'll manage with my own bow. After half an hour they already send me home tho
cos today was unofficial.

They complimented my first attempts and I was smiling a bit, feeling good. Not
as great as a year ago, but hell, no one is born a master. One of the older guys
told me: "Stick to archery, it's a rather good and healthy sport". He's so damn
right. The trainer then invited me to join their youth training every saturday eve.

Looking forward to it. =)

Edit due to the following:

Bracing and drawing a bow are two very different things.
To draw: To extract the string. To brace a bow: To attach a string to the limbs.

A nock-point is _not_ a knock-point.

gz toothy on learning to brace a bow hehe ^^
glad to c ur enthusiasm in archery xD

minor thing: "knocking point" is actually spelled "nocking point" (just for future reference xP)

the guys probably told ya wat it was alrdy and its purpose, but it isnt mandatory lol as long as u can draw an arrow perpendicular to the bow itself u could do without a marker for ur nocking point (imo)

thing of note: if ur feelin recreational but u still want a marker, u can just snip a short length of shoelace and tie it to your string ^^
i got a kisser button installed on my string by my teacher tho, so i myself just took it for granted.

another thing of note: my kisser button happens to be one of those metal ones that are bent around the string; i gotta use archery gloves bcuz the button has a sharp edge pointing out... if i posted a picture of my archery glove now, u'd c a decent gouge clawed off the index finger of my glove (my light gloves got torn up a bit so i got new ones - extra-thick tanned cowhide, like my first glove should have been) lol

im a person who's interested in taking my time at the archery range (i usually stay long enough to c 2 to 5 ppl come and go, taking and leaving the ranges adjacent to mine) (usually 2-4 hrs if the weather is nice and i'm bored of rappelz on a weekend). so i'v come to choose a rather light bow - so i dont get tired and start shaking (ruins aim ofc). i wanted a compound bow b4 bcuz i could hold my aim longer, but then again, i nvr liked holding my string for an eternity b4 i let go; my aim never seemed to get better if i held my string longer than 5 seconds lol. plus, my legs get stiff after a while, so i limit myself to only 6 to 12 arrows in my quiver

hold too little arrows, then i'll have to do a lot of walking back and forth. hold too many, and my legs lock up x.x. 8 and 9 were always lucky numbers for me, so i stuck to just that much ^^. also, bcuz i'v been training myself to shoot with "instincts", i try not to eye my target for long (another reason why i usually hold aim for 3 to 5 seconds)

anyhow, i hope u have fun on saturday ^^

PostSubject: Re: I have a random urge...   Tue Apr 20, 2010 1:30 pm

Saturday training, what to say?

Well, first of all I was nearly sh*ting my pants, cos I was so afraid to go to the youth training. I was thinking too hard, fearing there would be a dozen of pro-archers, raining all over me - to recognize I'm a freshbie - and welcome me in the good ol' crappelz style. The intention to make a good impression made me coming late a couple of minutes.

I couldn't have been more suprised. When I arrived a young guy (12) came towards me and curiously asked me, what sort of bow I'd be carrying. He couldn't see, cos I had uninstalled my recurve and inserted it in a special case - for easier transport and protection of the gear. Mommy loves her toys, Mommy cares for her toys.

Shyly I told him about my recurve and he ran to bring his own one. Zealousy he compared our bows, recognizing his black bow limbs and my white limbs, talking about shopping experience (we bought at the same internet store) and materials. His grip was of black plastik, mine is wood. Trainer came by and explained that plastic would be lighter - and tehrebore better for the young ones who haven't gotten their overbreed level and therefore lack some strength stats. ^^

Ashamed I admit that I'm not able to get the string attached to the bow - trainer helped me and we went to the range. How many hungry Highlevelarchers were waiting for me? None. The complete local youth are two 12 year old boys, one of them being a semi-rpo, shooting for four years already. Smart, friendly, helpful and very welcoming kids. They couldn't believe my age and they didn't care. They talked to me a lot, being happy about some "fresh blood" but treated me like one of their own. I felt so accepted, it warmed my heart.

Trainer reckognized my lack of nock-point, took a pen and marked the sring with white ink. He asked why I wouldn't have one. Told him, that I wanted to shoot by instinct only - and didn't find those metal nock-points that would have been attached by the seller attractive. Trainer explained a nock-point wouldn't hurt, said he hated those metal ones aswell and gave some examples what to sue to make one myself. He suggested a small twine or to use floss.

My first attempts were horrible. I totally forgot how to take care of the right position of the feathers to the bow again, were shivering a lot of excitement and still were thinking to be hard. Still the good impression - have to be perfect- thing. Trainer tried to calm me down, but when I saw how graceful he shot I was so jealous and wanted to copy it ofc.

Then he deceided to take my arrows and just let me train the "dry" bracing movement. Taking an invisible arrow out of my quiver, holding bow in a 45° angle, inserting arrow, slowly raising box and taking it into a more "straight upward" position - making sure the arm is straight, trying to not bend ellbow inwards, carefully bracing the string, opening both eyes (closed one by reflex), aiming, concentrating on target - and letting loose.

Lesson one I learned that day:
If you feel uncomfy, drop the bow slowly again and don't let arrow fly. Correct position instead, make sure to shiver less, to take some slow and deep breaths (not too deep tho), and carefully try again. It's nothing wrong in being unsure, nothing wrong in recognizing someones one feeling, trusting them and reacting to it.

Letting loose of the arrow if you already feel horrible is a fail, so rather recognize that, be honest with yourself and react to it, instead of praying the arrow my hit.

After 40min I got the idea and started to really concentrate on myself instead of target. Target helps you nothing, if you feel -something / anything. You have to feel well, to think less, to relax a bit - and still concentrate on what you are doing.

Lesson two:
Since I didn't always recognized my body movements I hit by myself a lot. My arm was tiring and I didn't feel that actively. I just bend the ellbow inwards by reflex - and ofc shoot myself with it. The end of the arrows and the string struck deeply. More than a dozen tiny haematoma build one big purple bruise (which nowerdays already is brown & black).

I felt the pain and the trainer "heard" it. He always catched me when I did this, cos he said: "That was your arm again, right? Correct your position please." I told him: "No Sir, not my arm, but my elbow. My favorite position. If it hurts bad enough I might recognize and learn." He suggested wearing a cuff like one of the cuties. I refused. If I wear a cuff, i won't feel anything at all - how am I supposed to feel when I'm doing it wrong again then? His opinion basically was, that I should learn to see that. He's right, but I'm wearing glasses already to my short vision and I'm in therapy cos I got issues with recognizing my body at all. Feeling pain is a good way to get to know yourself, so I'll refuse a longer arm-plate and will just continue with learning by doing.

Lesson three:
If you go to collect arrows ALWAYS stare at the floor you're crossing. I wasn't careful enough and by mistake stepped upon a very tiny arrow of one of the boys. I was so ashamed, I berely knew what to say. I told him I could gte him a new one or pay for it, he shrugged and said: "It's okay, sh*t happens." I still don't believe him and still feel bad. The second I get the complete data of his arrows I should fetch him half a dozen, just in case I break some more. Not that I intend to break them, but I know how dangerous I can be to the real world. o.o'

Training usually takes an hour, we spend 1.5 hours. I would have loved to stay even longer, but trainer send me home. He said the day was long enough and my arms / shoulder would surely be extremely painful the day afterwards already. No need to treat my body with more stress than he can handle. Wise man.

Luckily he helped me unbracing it - showing me what I already saw at the interwebs with the step-through-method. Buying a stringer was totally unnecessary, cos my bow always gets deinstalled for transport. Stringer only makes sense on longbows and recurves that don't get knocked into three single parts. The day was full of learning.

Today I went to the library and fetched some books, ordered another one at amazon (Zen in the Art of Archery, by Eugen herrigel), had a Ulti witch dp - and explored having loads of time and muse left.

I unpacked my bow, installed it and thought: Give it a try, what worse could happen than a fail? I attached the arms, took a deep breath, stood calm, made sure my feet are at the same distance as my shoulders, stepped through the bow and attached the string at the very first try. YAY!

[At Saturday teacher had demonstraded me, that stringing a bow isn't half as much trouble to the arms than the actual shooting, so I lost my fear. I'm glad I believed him, I'm glad he was worth the trust - and now will definitely have some shoots besides training aswell. Being sure I don't need trainer to get the bow ready is raising my heart towards the stars - I'm so proud and happy atm, I could jump to the moon. ^^]

Being in such a mood I took my floss, my bow and an arrow and sat down. I pretended to have a shot, sticked arrows nock into the string - and started to wrap floss around it. Don't ask me about how many knots I made (tried to avoid them), but it seemed to took ages. After a couple of wraps I began to get calmer and camer, nearly relaxed. I wanted to do it properly, I want my trainer to be proud. And if course I want it to be longlasting, so I won't have to do it again soon.

Strange-archer-Tooth was so delighted, she started cheering. Hopefully those feelings will continue through my archer-career. ^^
[And OMG, don't hurt me for such a long reply].

Since I was using a barebow - without an arrow rest - I just went to our local paint and tepestry store. The taylor asked, how he could help. I responded: "I have a rather special request for you, but to simplify things, please let me do something first". While saying that I unpacked my bow and installed it.

Then I continued: "Usually people use a small piece of plastic as arrow rest. Since they outwear rather quickly and don't fit neither my trainers nor my taste, we suggested using either fur or a piece of carpet. I thought, let's give it a try and directly went to you, since you are the specialist". Smilingly he asked: "Wouldn't carpet be too fat and make it impossible to shoot then?"

I love how man always react to weapon - especially to woman with weapons. They're all professional, interested, open-minded and soooo sweetly serious about it.

"Well", I nocked an arrow in place, holding the bow in a way he could see the details, "currently my nock-point is at this height, but if I glue some carpet on the bow window, all I have to do is change my nock-point, setting a bit higher and won't feel any difference in shooting. Quite the opposite happens: Due to the softer feeling of the carpet than the wood, the higher flexibility and less resistance, the arrow will fly smoother, cos the vanes just glide through."

The taylor was utterly astonished, went to the back of his shop, came with a dozen of samples and asked:
"Will this one do?" Velours, made of 100% Polyamid, 7.4mm height.

I beamed at him, telling him, it'd be perfect. That raised a smile on his face and he joyfully offered: "Pick one." "What's your opinion on the red one, since it is a red bow?" "Yeah, would have been my first choice aswell. YOu can have it." Stunned i replied: "Just like that? What about your other costumers? If you give me the complete piece, they won't be able to order a deep red carpet from you?" He grinned: "Don't you worry, we have more samples."

Well, while I was already at his store I bough two-component adhesive and now I'm going to fix my bow.
